Like most innovations,
6–4–3 Charts was born of necessity.
Derek Weldon was an assistant baseball coach for Tennessee Tech University when the team secured a spot in the 2017 NCAA Regional Tournament. On the overnight bus to Tallahassee, Derek scrambled to complete scouting charts for three opponents in two days. Lacking confidence in existing spray chart services and choosing not to subscribe to a service for the 2017 season, Derek was spending up to eight hours tediously sorting through all of the available information, organizing data, and manually creating charts himself. Working laboriously with his laptop on the bus, Derek had an idea: with all of the information available, a scouting service has the opportunity to efficiently put together fully comprehensive and objective spray charts. It could also serve to compile short-game stats and other advanced analytics. What if there was a service that took this information and
organized it into a highly detailed and intuitive product? He grabbed his phone and, as the bus sped through the night toward Florida, made a phone call that set 6–4–3 Charts in motion.
Rick Ahlf is a former baseball player and high school valedictorian whom Derek coached at Timberline High School in Washington State. He had recently graduated at the top of his class in the graduate aerospace engineering program from Arizona State University, and Derek remembered he had experience in software development. From the bus, Derek presented his former player with a hypothetical: if you had a given set of baseball data, could you create user-friendly charts to bring the numbers to life? Rick insisted that he could. Post-tournament, Derek followed up with Rick to begin designs on a prototype chart. With Rick on board, Derek realized that this idea could change the game of sabermetrics at the college level. It was time to seek business and financial guidance. Once again, he called an old friend.
Tim Kuhn, a childhood friend and former teammate of Derek’s, is a CPA and highly successful business professional. The two have stayed in touch over the years, largely because of their mutual love of baseball. Derek shared his plan with Tim and asked for advice on how to move forward. Intrigued by his old friend’s idea, Tim spent that evening researching the current market and knew that he wanted to be involved: he called Derek back the next day and became the third partner. Two months later, 6–4–3 Charts produced its first deliverable product.
Experts in their respective fields of coaching, software development, and business, co-founders Derek, Rick, and Tim have built a superior product to revolutionize the way coaches prepare to defeat each opponent with increased efficiency and confidence. 6–4–3 Charts’ mission is to provide clients a competitive advantage through the most accurate and applicable scouting reports and advanced analytics.
